FLORENCE, SC — Mitt Romney said yesterday he will release his tax returns, while acknowledging he pays a rate of 15 percent of his income to Uncle Sam, lower than many Americans with only a fraction of his wealth.

Romney, who is worth about $250 million, leads in the polls, but is facing mounting pressure by Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry to cough up his returns.

“What’s the effective rate I’ve been paying? It’s probably closer to the 15 percent rate than anything,” Romney told reporters.
