Orrick Wins Stunning Verdict for MGA in Bratz Retrial

In a stunning reversal of fortune for both MGA and its lawyers at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, a federal jury in Santa Ana, Calif., sided with MGA in its long-running dispute with Mattel over the rights to the Bratz dolls.

An eight-person jury in Santa Ana, Calif., found that Mattel does not own the rights to the Bratz dolls and MGA did not steal Mattel’s trade secrets. Orrick’s team was lead by Annette Hurst and Warrington Parker. MGA was also represented by Jennifer Keller of Keller Rackauckas. Michigan Cell Phone Fight: Cops Scanning Phones?

It’s a generally accepted conclusion that, absent exigent circumstances, police may not search an undetained person’s cell phone without a warrant or prior permission.

According to the ACLU, Michigan State Police, armed with cell phone extraction devices, has been violating this principle, illegally culling information from cell phones during traffic stops.

For Michigan State Police, cell phone data is an important part of many criminal investigations, which is why the agency purchased the commercially available Data Extraction Devices in 2006.

In 2008, a credible informant told the ACLU that the Michigan State Police cell phone scanners were secretly being used and without warrants, reports ABC News.

Pannone prepares for post-LSA world with white-label arm

Pannone is set to launch a white-label division to capitalise on the new opportunities that will arise when the Legal Services Act (LSA) comes into full force.

Affinity Solutions will launch on 1 May and will partner with companies from a number of industries including retailers, financial services, utilities and insurers to offer their customers own-label legal services.

Pannone’s travel litigation head Andrew Morton heads the 85-strong Affinity team, which is made up mostly of paralegals and will provide a range of legal services including employment advice, consumer disputes, fast-track injury claims, conveyancing and remortgaging.

88-year-old woman, choked to death by son: cops

Two Garden City cops rushed to the Olsen home on College Place – and found James bleeding from his wrists and his mother already dead.

An unemployed Long Island man ashamed over stealing his 88-year-old mother’s money strangled her and then slit his wrists in a botched suicide attempt, authorities said Friday.James Olsen, 56, choked Ruth Olsen with a scarf-like article of clothing inside their Garden City home early Thursday, authorities said.”We believe that he was conflicted over the amount of money he was spending and didn’t want mom to know,” Nassau County Police Detective Lt. John Azzata said.Details of the murder began to emerge after James Olsen called 9-1-1 about 8 p.m.

Hacker Pleads Guilty to Identity Theft and Credit Card Fraud Resulting in Losses of More Than $36 Million

WASHINGTON – Rogelio Hackett Jr., 26, of Lithonia, Ga., pleaded guilty today before U.S. District Judge Anthony J. Trenga in Alexandria, Va., to trafficking in counterfeit credit cards and aggravated identity theft, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride for the Eastern District of Virginia.  

 

According to court documents, U.S. Secret Service special agents executing a search warrant in 2009 at Hackett’s home found more than 675,000 stolen credit card numbers and related information in his computers and email accounts.   Ha
