Wife of Ventura man charged with assault and hate crime testifies about incident

The wife of a defendant accused of assault and a hate crime testified Friday that people in a large group leaving the restaurant where the incident occurred were aggressive and belligerent toward her husband and their friends.

Ashley Klopp, the wife of Nicholas Klopp, who is on trial in Ventura County Superior Court, said the incident on Dec. 18, 2010 was triggered after a misunderstanding on the patio of O-Sabi Japanese Restaurant in Ventura.

Nicholas Klopp is charged with felony assault and two misdemeanor crimes of battery and committing a hate crime. Prosecutors charge he threw a glass at Brian Schumacher and punched Aaron Argueta, who were attending a friend’s birthday party at the restaurant.

The Klopps along with a friend were attending a Christmas party held by the employers of Nicholas Klopp, his wife testified.

Wasco inmate death likely homicide

A Wasco State Prison inmate who died after being found unconscious in his jail cell around 10:30 p.m. Friday was originally thought to have committed suicide, but the case is now being investigated as a homicide, a Wasco State Prison official said.

The 54-year-old man was a parole violator who returned to custody for possession of alcohol and assault with a deadly weapon.

The suspect is a 31-year-old inmate who came from Orange County on May 12 on an 11-year sentence for carjacking.

The case is under investigation.

WA Girl, 12, Sentenced for Facebook Cyberstalking

In a story that demonstrates the viciousness that underlies girl-on-girl bullying, a Juvenile Court judge has sentenced a 12-year-old Seattle girl to 6 months of probation and 20 hours of community service for Facebook cyberstalking classmate Leslie Cote.

Cote, who has given the media permission to use her name to raise awareness of cyberstalking, was reportedly the subject of vulgar messages and wall posts.

Convicted of felony computer trespassing and cyberstalking, the 12-year-old defendant, along with a friend, accessed Cote’s Facebook account where they repeatedly posted lewd photos and called her a “slut,” reports The Seattle Times.

They also managed to gain access to her instant messaging account, which Reuters reports they used to send random messages soliciting sex on Cote’s behalf.

Both sources indicate that the girls had, until recently, been friends.

Former President of Lee Dynamics International Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy and Bribery Related to Department of Defense Contracts in Iraq

WASHINGTON – The former president of Lee Dynamics International, a defense contractor providing services to the U.S. military in Iraq, pleaded guilty today to an indictment charging him with a scheme to bribe military officials in order to obtain government contracts, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Criminal Division. 

                                                           

Justin W. Lee, 33, a resident of Philadelphia, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Joel H. Slomsky in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania to one count of conspiracy to commit bribery and four counts of bribery.  Lee and his father, George H. Wachtell, Davis Polk Handling Sale of NBA Team to Private Equity Titans

The Philadelphia 76ers became the latest National Basketball Association franchise to change hands Thursday, as the teams current owners agreed to sell the club to a group led by two private equity bigwigs, a hedge fund manager, and a former attorney from Greenberg Traurig.

Comcast Spectator, a unit of Philadelphia-based cable giant Comcast Corporation, announced that the deal would only include the 76ers, not the teams 20,000-seat Wells Fargo Centeror sports network Comcast Sportsnet .

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but various news sources put the price of the 76ers at $280 million.
