Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney sought on Wednesday to stay away from the issue of how much he pays in taxes a day after acknowledging that his income tax rate is about 15 percent, but a key ally joined rivals’ calls for Romney to release his tax returns.

During a campaign speech in Spartanburg, Romney avoided mentioning the comment he made a day earlier that his income tax rate is “probably closer to 15 percent than anything,” making it lower than the rate paid by most wageearning Americans.

The remark put Romney, one of the wealthiest people to ever run for the White House, at the forefront of a national debate over the fairness of U.S. income tax rates.

NC Bar to Revisit Suspension Order for Former AG and Governor Mike Easley

A lawyer convicted of a felony often loses his or her law license. But a former governor and attorney general of North Carolina had his suspended for two years after a federal campaign-finance reporting violation.

That will make Mike Easley eligible to practice again at the end of this year, the Charlotte Observer reported last week.

However, that possibly might not be the final answer, according to a subsequent article published on the Investigations blog of the News & Observer.

It says the North Carolina State Bar is going to correct some incorrect information on the disciplinary order suspending the former McGuireWoods attorney.

Supporters patiently await priest’s release from Sacramento jail

Supporters of the Rev. Uriel Ojeda waited into the darkness Monday to see if the Catholic priest jailed on child molestation charges would be able to post bail.

More than 50 people sang songs in Spanish and flew balloons outside the Sacramento County Main Jail while Ojeda’s attorney and bail bondsmen worked on the details to gain what they expected would be the priest’s release.

Ojeda, 32, is accused of seven counts of molesting a girl under the age of 14 while he served at parishes in Woodland and Redding. He had been jailed in lieu of $5 million bail until Sacramento Superior Court Judge Marjorie Koller last week lowered it to $700,000.

Former Department of Defense Employee Sentenced to 30 Months in Prison for Submitting False Travel Claims Totaling Nearly $500,000

WASHINGTON – A former civilian employee of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), a component of the Department of Defense, was sentenced today to 30 months in prison for making more than $485,000 in false travel claims using the defense travel system, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Criminal Division.  

 

John R. Brock, 52, of Crofton, Md., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Robert L. Wilkins in the District of Columbia. In addition to his prison term, Brock was sentenced to three years of supervised release, ordered to pay $485,535 in restitution and ordered to forfeit three sail boats and two residential properties.
