In Dagenham, East London, sixty-four year old Barry Lester has been awarded work accident compensation in the region of $20,000. Barry was at the Ford car plant where he had worked for the past twenty four years, but while attempting to lift the top most box from a stack, the box got caught on the box underneath, and he ended up having the full weight of all of the boxes on him. As the boxes all contained car parts, Barry suffered a serious groin strain, and had to have three weeks off from his job.
This would not normally constitute for such a large compensation, however, a year after the incident, Mr. Lester fell through a rotten floorboard in his staff toilets, which made his previous injury flare up again, which resulted in even more time off work due to injuries in the workplace.
Mr. Lester claimed that he was no longer able to work overtime at the car plant, resulting in loss of possible money, as well as giving up his hobbies such as golf and gardening. His solicitors pursued a claim for the groin injury as this occurred in both incidents, and an out o court settlement of $20,000 was agreed after the workplace admitted liability.
