U.S. Marshal Albert Njera and Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims talked Thursday, and both are confident an agreement can be reached in a dispute over housing federal prisoners at the downtown Fresno jail.

“We’re on the same page,” Mims said. “I think we’ve got it worked out.”

What isn’t certain is if the nearly 100 prisoners transferred earlier this week from the Fresno County Jail to a facility near Bakersfield will be moved back.

“Kern County is now involved, and we need to maintain a fair and equitable relationship with them,” said Njera, who is the marshal for the Eastern District of California, a federal judicial region that includes Fresno.

The dispute arose after Fresno County asked the U.S. government to reduce the number of federal prisoners in the downtown jail.
