The Fresno woman accused of buying alcohol for an underage driver involved in last year’s horrific Greyhound bus collision on Highway 99 will be the only person prosecuted, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.

And although six people died in the July 22, 2010 crash, Michelle Kay Cole, 22, of Fresno is charged only with a misdemeanor for allegedly buying alcohol for people under 21 resulting in death, District Attorney Elizabeth Egan said at a news conference.

The backdrop for the news conference was the damaged Chevrolet TrailBlazer driven by 18-year-old Sylvia Garay and a Honda CR-V that was entangled in the collision.

The fatal crash, said Barry Gleeson, a spokesman for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, “was not an accident. This was a violent crime.”

But the misdemeanor is the most serious charge the DA’s Office could file against Cole, Egan said.
