Fresno police have arrested a 20-year-old man and charged him with murdering a toddler Sunday in a horrific case of child abuse.

The man, Xavier Christopher Hawkins, was the live-in boyfriend of the boy’s mother, police said. Hawkins also goes by the last name Weeks.

He was arrested Thursday and booked in Fresno County Jail on charges of murder, child abuse causing great bodily harm and penetration with a foreign object. He is on probation for weapons charges, police said.

“It was very apparent that the child as a result of the injuries was tortured,” Chief Jerry Dyer said at a news conference Thursday evening.

The child was identified as Syre Bridges, who would’ve been 2 years old on Nov. 25. Police said Syre died of blunt force trauma.
