Clifford Chance funds associate Stephen Fox has quit the firm to join Weil, Gotshal & Manges – dashing the hopes of those who had tipped him to stay.

It follows the departure of three funds partners and a tax partner from CC to the US firm last month.

Fox, who has been at the magic circle firm since he was a trainee, was tipped for early promotion to partnership in the wake of the group exit. He is close friends with former funds head Ed Gander, one of the four who left the firm. Gander was best man at Fox’s wedding.

Fox has handed in his notice and will join Weil as an associate after he has served the notice period.

CC funds partners Nick Benson and Nigel Clark, as well as tax partner Jonathan Kandel, joined Gander in quitting CC last month for Weil .

The departures left Nigel Hatfield as CC’s only remaining funds partner in the City.

Last year CC funds chief Jason Glover left the firm to join the London office of Simpson Thacher .
