Staffordshire Schools Have More Personal Injury Claims

In the last financial year, school children in Staffordshire were paid out nearly £60,000 in compensation for personal injury claims whilst in school. There were only 11 cases that were reported, and these ranged from the normal such as slips and trips, to the slightly obscure; a girl getting her arm trapped in a trampoline whilst putting it away.
The highest compensation that was paid out last year was to a pupil who had fell over and landed on some logs. The student was given over £10,000 in compensation. This information was made available after a request due to the Freedom on Information rule, and was thereby published by the County Council of Staffordshire.
Even though there was a decrease of 14 claims from the previous year, there was a staggering 40% rise in the amount of compensation that was actually paid out to pupils. The girl whose arm was trapped in the trampoline was reimbursed with over £5,000 for her injuries, and possibly the strangest of the 11 claims was a student who was hit in the mouth by a bell; they were given nearly £4,500
Even though it has been strongly denied, the deputy leader of the Staffordshire County Council Ian Parry has blamed the compensation culture of Britain for the rise in costs. He stated that in everything there is a fluctuation in statistics, and this is included in them. Some of these injuries would possibly have not been claimed for in the past, but that is the current culture.
The safety of all pupils is obviously the first priority of every single one of the 400 school in the county, Mr Parry stated, but as with everywhere, school and workplace alike, accident will always happen.
